Queenstown occupies a truly special space in a long list of New Zealand tourism destinations. It is special not only for its incredible scenic value but mostly for a word it now firmly associated with – adventure.

This is the adventure capital of the world.

Sure you can take a leisurely stroll in plenty of places around here and visit some great locations but if you really want to get your adrenalin pumping you couldn’t be in a better spot.

A modest start would be to take a scenic flight by plane or helicopter. But don’t stop there, you can also take a balloon ride or … what about a hang gliding experience?

From the air the area is a wonder to behold. “Simply stunning,” are the words that spill from most people’s lips or “just breathtaking,” and “I’ve seen the brochures and some really good videos but they’re nothing compared to being here and doing it.”

Experiences on the ground are just as good. Have you ever tried heli-canyoning. Apart from bungy jumping this, for my money anyway, has to be the most exhilarating, heart stopping piece of fun I’ve had in a long, long while.

It starts with a fantastic helicopter ride over Skippers Canyon and the Shotover River and drops you into an absolutely amazing rainforest. It’s not for the faint hearted this trip but it absolutely an unforgettable experience.

You can’t depart Queenstown of course without taking a jet boat ride. For some ideas on this front check out Shotover Jet and Dart River Safaris which provide an awesome experience through world heritage scenery.

Here are some more action ideas in Queenstown.

Really a fancy name for a flying fox but hey, when you see the scenery this ride takes you through, why get fussy about definitions.

Bungy Jumping
Yes the original Kawarau River bungy jumping experience created by A J Hacket in 1988 is still operating and just as popular as ever.

TSS Earnslaw
Head out onto Lake Wakatipu for a great view of the area on this beautifully restored old steamer.

The Luge
Take yourself on an exhilerating ride and take in the scenery at the same time. A great experience for young and older ones alike.

Down & Dirty:
What about a quad bike experience or a more ‘sedate’ experience in a 4WD vehicle.

Check out Trey Ratcliff’s incredible video below … it’s no wonder this area found its was into Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
