Poronui Safari Camp was once described by Forbes magazine as one of the top 10 fly fishing lodges in the world.
Its acccess to remote rivers stocked with top quality trout is virtually unsurpassed and coupled with the well recognised quality of its guiding services this lodge offers one of New Zealand’s top of range holiday stays.
Poronui is a back country camp located near the Mohaka River on the edge of the Kaimanawa Forest Park.
And they know really know how to host. Guests staying here have remarked at length about the “superb hospitality, comfort and cleanliness” of the accommodations here while others talk of the variety of activities – “it’s not all just hunting and fishing.”
There is a huge range of “breathtaking scenery” to enjoy and you can do it on foot in any of several guided walks, by horseback, from a four wheel drive or from a helicopter. Other activities include skeet shooting, archery, mountain biking and relaxing spa treatments.
If that’s not enough there’s one special attraction that comes at the end of a hard day of good fun – stargazing.
Because of its remoteness the night sky here is absolutely magnificent.
The safari camp (“a luxurious camping experience”) is situated some 12km from the main lodge but in spite of this you will still be served a three course meal and before wrapping the night up with wine and toasted marsh mellows on an open fire.
The campsite is fully self-contained and meals can be self-catered, catered on site or delivered from the lodge kitchen. At night, guests sleeping in the rustic timber and canvas campsite are serenaded by the rhythmic chuckle of the river.
